This candle was inspired by the women’s marches around the world in January 2017, and by news that reminds me daily of people and a planet that are vulnerable and need our help. There is so much to be done, but small efforts can yield huge changes over time. The Hope in the Dark candle is inspired by Rebecca Solnit’s must-read book of the same name. Because, as Solnit writes, “Power comes from the shadows and the margins . . . our hope is in the dark around the edges, not the limelight of centre stage. Our hope and often our power.”
These 250ml hand-poured eco-soy candles are $15 each, with ALL money (after the cost of materials) donated to a cause fighting on behalf of the environment or vulnerable populations, including people of colour, women, LGBTQ+ people, and refugees. As of August 2017, over $1200 CDN has been donated to Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and Nellie’s Support & Shelter for Women in Toronto.
The candle scent is lemon-aid (with a nod to Queen Bey) and burns approximately 30 hours.
If you’re interested in bulk purchases or smaller format candles (125 ml candles are also possible), please email me.
And because we can’t just shop our way to a better world, by the time your candle burns down, I challenge you to come up with your own way to raise money, awareness or mobilize action to make the world a safe and just place for all humans. So far these candles have been used in healing ceremonies in First Nations communities, in a fundraising raffle, and have inspired a necklace that supports Planned Parenthood. Thank you, friends, for all you support. In dark times, thank you for being the light.
Contains: eco-soy wax, lemon blossom phthalate-free fragrance oil.
Jars can be washed and reused once the candle has burned down completely. For best results, let the wax melt straight across, and keep your burn time to under a couple of hours at a time.
